🗓️ How the Course Runs

Each day is structured to blend morning classroom learning with afternoon live tour guiding:

08:00 – 12:00 — At the WCA Training Facility

Training modules with instructors
Daily quiz on home study subjects
Guiding tools, binocular skills, and safety practice
Species ID and communication drills

12:00 – 12:45 — Lunch break

12:45 – 13:15 — Meet at E-Ko Shop, Picton

Receive your daily guiding tasks
Prepare guest briefing

13:30 – 17:30 — On-Water Practice

Participate in 4-hour wildlife tours with paying guests
Rotate roles in interpretation, spotting, guest care, and commentary
Receive coaching and feedback from a certified trainer

Join us in beautiful Picton, New Zealand for a 5-day immersive practical training experience designed to turn marine knowledge into real-world guiding skills.

Train in a working marine tourism environment, develop your confidence with guests and wildlife, and work toward WCA Level 3 Certified Field Guide (Marine) — CFG certification.

Field Guide (Marine) courses run between May and August 2027, with six dedicated winter training weeks.

Each course is designed as a small-group practical training experience, giving students direct access to trainers, vessels, wildlife and real guests.

Courses can accommodate up to 10 students, subject to operational requirements.

Early booking is recommended.

🔭 Optional Marine Guide Binoculars

Binoculars are one of the most important working tools used by a professional marine guide.

Students are encouraged to bring their own suitable binoculars or add a set to their booking.

💵 Marine Guide Training Binoculars — NZD $129

Your binoculars will be presented to you during the course introduction in Picton and are yours to keep.

During the course you will learn how to use them correctly for wildlife spotting, scanning, tracking animals and supporting professional guide commentary.

🌊 Practical On-Water Training

Each training day combines classroom learning with practical field experience.

Morning training develops the knowledge and skills you will then practise in a real marine tourism environment.

Afternoon practical training normally involves joining the 1:30 pm Motuara Island and Dolphin Cruise with E-Ko Tours.

Students work alongside experienced guides and real customers while developing practical skills in:

Wildlife spotting
Binocular use
Species identification
Guide commentary
Guest communication
Wildlife interpretation
Responsible wildlife viewing
Professional guide conduct
Working as part of a marine tourism team

This is where classroom knowledge becomes practical guiding experience.

Marine activities remain subject to weather, sea conditions, vessel availability, wildlife activity and operational requirements.

🎓 Entry Requirements

Before attending the practical Level 3 course, participants must have completed:

✅ WCA Level 1

and either:

✅ The FREE Level 2 course

✅ The full WCA Level 2 course completed independently

Evidence of completion may be requested before the practical course begins.

Accommodation is not included in the course fee.

Limited accommodation may be available through our training partners or local Picton accommodation providers.

REQUIREMENTS TO PASS THE COURSE:

Have a knowledge base on marine species learnt on Level 1 (Free on sign-up $199)
Gain profiiency to identify animal behaviours, respond accordingly, and be able to assert when an approach is not suitable
Fully understand and assert WCA best practice and local legislation on how to behave around marine mammals
Display techniques to make all Guest interested in what you tell them
Learn how to function in a Team of Guides and display teamwork
Pass the written exam
Pass the Oral exam
Complete all required modules / Quizzes
