Join us in beautiful Picton, New Zealand for a 5-day immersive practical training experience designed to turn marine knowledge into real-world guiding skills.

Train in a working marine tourism environment, develop your confidence with guests and wildlife, and work toward WCA Level 3 Certified Field Guide (Marine) β€” CFG certification.

Field Guide (Marine) courses run between May and August 2027, with six dedicated winter training weeks.

Each course is designed as a small-group practical training experience, giving students direct access to trainers, vessels, wildlife and real guests.

Binoculars are one of the most important working tools used by a professional marine guide.

Students are encouraged to bring their own suitable binoculars or add a set to their booking.

Your binoculars will be presented to you during the course introduction in Picton and are yours to keep.

During the course you will learn how to use them correctly for wildlife spotting, scanning, tracking animals and supporting professional guide commentary.


🌊 Practical On-Water Training

Each training day combines classroom learning with practical field experience.

Morning training develops the knowledge and skills you will then practise in a real marine tourism environment.

Afternoon practical training normally involves joining the 1:30 pm Motuara Island and Dolphin Cruise with E-Ko Tours.

Students work alongside experienced guides and real customers while developing practical skills in:

  • Wildlife spotting
  • Binocular use
  • Species identification

  • Guest communication
  • Wildlife interpretation

REQUIREMENTS TO PASS THE COURSE:

  • Have a knowledge base on marine species learnt on Level 1 (Free on sign-up $199)
  • Gain profiiency to identify animal behaviours, respond accordingly, and be able to assert when an approach is not suitable
  • Fully understand and assert WCA best practice and local legislation on how to behave around marine mammals
  • Display techniquesΒ  to make all Guest interested in what you tell them
  • Learn how to function in a Team of Guides and display teamwork
